The current landscape of writing spaces feel occupied by white writers. They often also cover works by white writers. And, they are also taught or organized by white writers. After attending writing sessions, workshops, and courses locally and nationally, Drs. Dadabhoy and Landry found themselves wanting to create a space protected for voices that have been marginalized. Writing in Color is a free writing course for people of color. It was developed to create a space for people of color to learn the value of reading articles by writers of color as well as sharing their reflections as a class. We specifically have choose teachers who identify as people of color to create a clear foundation of safety. Additionally, the majority of r and readings included in the curriculum are from writers of color. Lastly, participants are invited to enroll in the writing courses as a means to both share and heal collectively. While we do lightly encourage publication of written pieces, the primary goal is to create a culture of safety and teach concrete writing skills.
